The bottom line concerning the Seattle Sonics situation is, it's about Seattle Center, PERIOD! KeyArena is merely an important component. If the Sonics ever leave KeyArena, Seattle Center will no longer be the center of Seattle. Take the Sonics out of KeyArena and it will be the equivalent of taking KeyArena out of Seattle Center. Once that happens, it will be the equivalent of taking Seattle Center out of Seattle.
Had the former Sonics ownership group, headed by Howard Schultz, made the KeyAreana lease an issue before purchasing the team, they would still own the Sonics and the team would be playing in KeyArena beyond 2010. Had the Seattle City Council renegotiated the terms for the lease, the Sonics would undoubtedly be playing in KeyArena for another 40 years. And had the Seattle City Council renegotiated the lease and the Schultz Group still sold the team, the Sonics would be playing in KeyArena at Seattle Center and talk of a new arena would be non-existent. The Sonics entire 40 year history is tied to Seattle Center and the Lower Queen Anne neighborhood.
It's one thing to fight for the Sonics to stay in Seattle, but that fight should include keeping the team playing in KeyArena at Seattle Center. And now, Brian Robinson, founder of Save Our Sonics, Chris Van Dyke, founder of Citizens for More Important Things and Seattle City Council Member, Nick Licata have a mutually agreeable PLAN for keeping the Sonics playing at KeyArena by renovating Seattle Center.
So the REAL bottom line is, it's "PUT UP OR SHUT UP TIME" because if and when the Sonics are no longer playing in KeyArena, it will be too late to say anything! So the only thing to say now is, Who is going to join the fight to save Seattle Center?
